This is extremely unique and a very rare find. This is a cassotte in French copper from the early 18th century.
It is a recipient for water with an automatic pouring spout because the hole is based at the bottom. It would have been filled from a bucket and then left on top of the bucket and the water would pour straight from long spout, the hands could then be placed underneath and washed in running water, amazing!
In other words one of the first forms of faucets and it still works so well.
An absolute conversation piece, a stunning piece of history and so beautiful.
I purchased this from a domaine in the historic city of St Emillion just outside of Bordeaux, where I am sure it was once used in the vineyards.
