This is a fabulous and rare 19th century half glazed green confit pot from south west France dating from the mid 1800's.

Green confit pots are much rarer than the yellow ones and are becoming very collectible.

These confit pots were used for storing duck during the winter months when they were placed in the ground outside up to the glaze line.

As is often the case with these confit pots this one has two holes. One in the base and one in the side, which I have shown in the photos. But what is interesting is learning about these. These are not faults or detrimental in any way, these holes were made, back in the 1800's quite intentionally. Because the duck was stored in duck fat inside these pots which were then place in the ground outside to the hight just below the neck. These holes were made so that any water that entered could escape and not sit inside the pots and then freeze with night frosts. It was actually very clever.

It measures 23cms/ just over 9 inches high
