This is a truly stunning and well-loved antique French copper 'daubière' from the early 18th century. With cast iron handles and legs.
We bought this from a man who lives just forty minutes drive from us who was clearing out the home of his grandparents, his grandmother was in her 90's and had moved to a retirement home. Nothing had changed in the house he said for what seemed like centuries, his grandmother remembers her grandmother using this.
The daubière is a lidded pan used for cooking stews or braising meats in a fireplace in a manner that mimics cooking of an oven. The name derives from the fact that they were used for cooking a “daube ” - a French slow-cooked stew, usually with beef.
