This is a stunning antique French Confit Pot dating from around 1880.
It is semi glazed with a yellow glaze. The glazing is missing in a few places because these pots were made to be used. They were an essential part of the kitchen in the 1800's in the days before refrigeration. The inside is glazed with a pale yellow glaze.
Please note this has been repaired at the base as I have clearly shown in the photos, it would appear that a small hole, (very often pierced in these pots to allow for water to drain out) has been filled.
When I use these pots for flowers with water, I always put a glass container inside, as even if they have no holes the terracotta absorbs water and might mark the furniture. A glass pot inside filled with water is the ideal solution!
This pot comes from here in the South West of France from where I bought it and would have been used to store cooked duck during the winter months. The duck would have been cooked and then wrapped in duck fat and placed in the pot. The pot was then placed partially underground in the soil up to the line of the glaze, where it would be stored for the winter.
These pots are getting harder and harder to find, once they are gone they are gone forever as they are fabulous antiques from a bygone era. I have tried to show clearly in the photos what it is like and an defects. it measures 24cms high (9.5")
